Since our last meeting, the three of us have been working on the tasks that need to be completed before testing can begin:
-Investigating different testing methods for our particular audience
-Making the necessary alterations in the code to get one of the games running on the Touch Table
-Establishing a location suitable for testing our prototypes
Donna continues to conduct research on the privacy and consent issues involved in testing our devices, and is investigating the most successful strategy in testing our games with our target audience, which is children around the ages of 4-12. She discovered that simply observing the interaction with the system was the most effective way of extracting results from children in these age groups.
Kyliah is working with the Touch Table, and examining the API so the necessary changes can be made to the code.
We were able to get the departments consent to occupy one of the study rooms located on the second floor of the ECS building to test our projector game with the students and faculty members. We plan on implementing a back-projection system, which will display the graphics on a sheet of specialized paper covering the window. This will make the graphics visible form outside of the study room, and mounting a camera above the window (for motion tracking purposes) will allow the players to interact with the system.
Elyse is in the process of gathering the materials necessary for the installation (glossy paper, CPU, camera, projector, etc), as well as different backdrops that can be used in the game.
We will begin the installation and testing of the projector game shortly after reading break. This will provide us with 3-4 weeks of rigorous testing during the months of February and March, which agrees with our timeline.
We also discussed sending a video of the projector game to the San Diego Zoo, to notify them of the direction this research has taken us. Below is a link to a video of the prototype we will be testing.
